    Swami Satyar Atnananda Saraswati

Date of birth: 20th October 1933
Rebirth into Sannyasa: 1982 whilst studying under the guidance of Swami Satyananda Saraswati in the state of Bihar, India.

A journalist and a physiotherapist before returning to university as a mature student to study education. As her degree course, Swami took psychology and counselling.
Yoga has been her way of coping with the vissitudes of life. She transformed her plan to employ her degree in education to train physiotherapists to training yoga teachers on behalf of The Friends of Yoga International Society. Swami has trained hundreds of yoga teachers since 1972.

Some of Swami’s achievements include: raising funding and research for the Yoga for Health Foundation started by Howard Kent; working for the Yoga Biomedical Trust with Dr Robin Monroe (research and lecturing); working for twelve years as a physiotherapist using yoga for the Brent Association of Disabled People.
Swami was diploma board officer of FRYOG. She is still a theory and practical assessor for teacher training courses. She has run summer schools, week ends and seminars along with being a mother and a monk (but that is another story!).

Having taught yoga in schools, church halls, prisons, colleges, university hospitals and given lectures on the philosophy of yoga, physical routines for women and participated in the Puja ceremonial within the Narayana Temple (London), Swami is now based in her own Ashrama in Windlesham, Surrey. The Centre was opened in 1993.

Swami’s ethics include the attitude that one small voice can make a difference. She encourages us all to try out the principle ourselves.

    Swami`s philosphy . . . . . . .

    Greetings from Swami Satyar Atnananda

In the western Hemisphere yoga is seen as a "fad" by some people. Actually Yoga is a systematic science, a set of techniques and whilst yoga is not a religion, its practical teachings are an integral part of the great formal religions of this world.

The origins of yoga are obscure, going back many thousands of years. Its central teachings are that mankinds essential nature is divine perfect and infinite.

Remaining unaware of this reality we constantly identify ourselves to this body, this mind, and to external objects. That False identification makes us think and feel as though we are imperfect and unlimited, subject to sorrow, to death and decay.
Comparing the science of yoga with the great religions of the world, one realizes that yoga science offers practical methods to aspirants of any religion, so that they can know the centre of conciousness within.

Through the meditative methods of yoga, one can dispel the darkness of ignorance and become aware of one`s essential nature, which is free from all imperfections. Thus one shines with pure light, knowledge and love.

Let your light shine, dear seeker. I believe a wealth of insight awaits you as you tread the yogic path.

    Yours in guru`s grace
    Swami Satyar Atnananda Saraswati
